If you went to a cafe yesterday and paid a surcharge, what does that mean for Monday?If you’re working this weekend, do you get two lots of holiday pay?Waitangi Day is being Monday-ised - just the latest public holiday to be celebrated twice this year, with Anzac Day to follow in April.The spate of Monday-ised holidays has led to a bunch of questions about how it works for customers and staff alike.Business New Zealand Chief Executive Kirk Hope told Francesca Rudkin that there are no rules of when the surcharge can be applied - and that could lead to a smaller surcharge across the whole weekend at some hospitality venues.Hope says that a cafe that opens on Saturday will have to give staff time and a half as well as the public holiday on Monday. "What businesses have to factor those costs into how they charge customers, and in some cases whether they choose to open or not."
