The concern is not simply about food—it is about priorities. We should first accept the yoke of Heaven through prayer before tending to our own physical comfort.The Kitzur therefore rules that even coffee or tea with sugar or milk should not ordinarily be consumed before davening. However, important exceptions exist. Someone who is old, weak, or needs food or drink for health reasons may eat or drink before prayer.
