Kitzur Yomi #75 | Siman 9, Seif 4 | What If the Tzitzis Hole Tears?

from Kitzur Yomi with Yossi · host Yossi Weinberger

What happens if the hole holding your tzitzis tears and the strings are now closer to the edge than Halachah normally permits? In this episode of Kitzur Yomi, the Kitzur Shulchan Aruch teaches that if the tzitzis were properly positioned when they were originally tied, they remain valid even if the hole or edge of the garment later tears and causes them to fall within the minimum required distance. The Torah's requirement that the tzitzis be properly positioned "on the corners of their clothes" applies at the time the tzitzis are attached. A later tear does not retroactively invalidate tzitzis that were attached correctly.Nevertheless, the Kitzur recommends reinforcing both the hole and the edge of the garment with a hem to prevent tearing and preserve the proper distance. The proper distance is especially important when the tzitzis are originally attached. If the hole was correctly positioned when the tzitzis were tied, a later tear does not invalidate them. This remains true even if the tear brings the tzitzis closer to the edge than the normal minimum measurement. The Torah's placement requirement applies at the time of attaching the tzitzis. It is preferable to reinforce the hole and garment edge to prevent tearing. This se'if continues an important principle from the previous halachah: the condition of the garment at the time the mitzvah is performed matters. If the tzitzis were attached properly, later wear and tearing do not automatically undo what was done correctly. At the same time, the Kitzur encourages prevention. We shouldn't merely rely on something remaining technically kosher—we should care for our mitzvah objects so they remain in the best possible condition.Key TakeawaysPractical Lesson
