How Does Knee Pain Occur? There are many things that can cause knee pain. Autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid or psoriatic arthritis would be the most common examples. Osteoarthritis is a very common reason for knee pain. As we age the knee produces less synovial fluid. This viscous fluid helps cushion the knee. Less cushioning means more wear and tear on the meniscus which causes knee pain. This, in turn, leads to more osteoarthritis also called the old age of the knees. Trauma from sports or accidents is another cause of knee pain. Often severe trauma requires surgical intervention. This would be more likely to be from tears to the anterior cruciate ligament and to a lesser extent to the posterior cruciate ligament. These ligaments attach the tibia to the femur. When you extend your leg (thnk of kicking a soccer ball) this motion is called extension. At the final point of extension, there is a locking motion that can irritate the meniscus if the forces are applied at the wrong location. This can be a big reason you have knee pain. Overweight people tend to have more knee pain. Losing weight will always help the knees feel better.Runners are at risk for knee pain from all the pounding the knees get from all those miles. People who climb ladders seem to have more knee pain. So the question is, who doesn't get knee pain? Not many people these days. How to get knee pain relief? Knee pain relief can be obtained initially by icing a sore knee and resting the leg at an incline.NSAIDs are often used to help pain and inflammation of the knee. Some people use knee braces for their knee pain. The brace is used during activity to help support the knee. There are knee injections using rooster cartilage or synthetic hyaluronic acid to replace lost synovial fluid. One can always turn to surgery to repair a torn or frayed meniscus. Knee pain from an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament can require surgery to repair. However, if it is minor you may escape surgery and allow it to heal on its own. This type of injury is usually related to trauma, in fact, it has ended the careers of many football players. The most serious type of knee pain relief would be from totally replacing the knee joint. Longer lasting knee pain would benefit from the Knee on Trac Solution. Core Health Darien-Dr.Brian McKay is the only facility in Fairfield County to offer this treatment for chronic knee pain.
