Knickerbocker's History of New York Vol. 2 Book VII Chapter X

In which the stalwart Peter Stuyvesant, in the throes of civic defiance, dispatches his loyal trumpeter Van Corlear on a desperate and stormy mission to rouse the countryside to the city’s defence, only to witness a tragic fate that haunts the surrounding land with spectral lament. Meanwhile, the fractious burgomasters and officious counsellors provoke the fiery governor’s ire with unwelcome counsel and insolent demands, culminating in a tempestuous scene of authority and insult that stirs the passions of the borough and its people.
