Knife design from a whole different angle

Antony Richards  Ep 12   Antony started out doing silversmithing and went onto do two degrees in design. Remembers in 1996 walking into an army surplus and buying a knife when you could carry a knife without issues. In 2012 he and his partner decided to go into business together where the decision was made that they would put time and energy into making products. In 2015 they had a house fire in their home which involved their office space. So, during the rebuild of their lives and home/ office. Recount how his father always wanted to be a chocolatier but never did and it made him want to do the person who doesn't get to do the thing that makes him happy. Works out of 2m x3m shed and decided that he didn't want to wait till he had a bigger shed. Fells he is in a very lucky situation that he is where he can make what he wants and has a partner that supports him. Feels that knives are the very integral to who we are now and historically. He started out making kitchen knives but realized that he wanted to make something different. As a designer, he looked at the idea of the knife as a problem that needed to be solved. Isn't looking to create art knives he wants to create a usable product. Is hoping to submit his 3 knives soon to become a member of the Australian Knifemakers Guild. Feels he kind of takes some of the accepted rules in knife making and pushes the, to dee if he can make them work. Workshops are like budgets you can work to what you've got as efficient as possible. Of always be wanting more. And never get anything done with what you have. The 18 cutlery co came from a tattoo of 18 in the palm of his hand. And the idea for that came from a manga movie (Akira). Talks about his initial design and starts out his ideas in small thumbnail size pics before he moves to full-sized drawings. Even then he still hasn't finished the design process till he has made the knife.
