Knowing the Shepherd’s Voice

from All Saints Hampton · host John Winterburn

For the director of music. Of David. A psalm. You have searched me, Lord,    and you know me.You know when I sit and when I rise;    you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down;    you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue    you, Lord, know it completely. You hem me in behind and before,    and you lay your hand upon me.Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,    too lofty for me to attain.Where can I go from your Spirit?    Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there;    if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn,    if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me,    your right hand will hold me fast.If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me    and the light become night around me,”even the darkness will not be dark to you;    the night will shine like the day,    for darkness is as light to you.Psalm 139:1-12“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd. The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”John 10:11-18

As humans we have a deep desire for relationship, a need to be truly known by another. The good news is that Jesus knows us deeply, intimately, better than we could ever know ourselves.
