Kuru. A nevető halál.

Az 1930-as évek elején egy rejtélyes agyi rendellenességről kezdtek hírek érkezni, amely Pápua- Új- Guineában, a keleti felföldön élő őslakosokat, főként a Fore törzset érintette. A Fore nép évszázadokig élt a „modern“ civilizációtól felfedezetlenül. A törzs kb. 1920 körül hallott először a fehér emberekről, 1930-tól aranybányászok, protestáns misszionáriusok és kormánytisztviselők jutottak el hozzájuk. Ők találkoztak a kőkorszaki kultúra teljesen idegen világával: varázslással, törzsi konfliktusokkal... és a rettegett, furcsa betegséggel. Áldozatai a leírások szerint kontrollálhatatlanul reszketnek, hátborzongatóan nevetnek és a betegségből nincs kiút - mindig halálhoz vezet. Aranybányászok és misszionáriusok számoltak be az elborzasztó és furcsa halálesetekről, amely az őserdőben a Fore törzset tizedelte és amely neve Kuru volt, a nevető halál...
