KZN on alert as fears of overnight looting persist after anti-illegal immigration marches

from Kaya 959 · host Phemelo Motene

Although Tuesday's anti-illegal immigration marches in KwaZulu-Natal ended without major incidents, authorities remain on high alert amid fears of further overnight looting. Thousands took part in demonstrations across the province, but isolated attacks on foreign-owned spaza shops were reported in Hammarsdale, Mariannridge and Clermont. Community leaders say looters struck in the early hours after police patrols had moved on, with eight shops targeted in Mariannridge alone. The provincial government says a heavy police presence will remain in hotspot areas over the coming days. Phemelo speaks to KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli about security measures and efforts to prevent further violence. Kayafm
