En las culturas antiguas como la China y Egipcia el culto a los muertos es un símbolo de unidad familiar. Les rendían culto construyendo templos y pirámides. En la cultura China por ejemplo, en los aniversarios, se quemaba incienso, se encendían candelas y colocaban ofrendas de alimentos sobre un altar. Eran los días en los que se recordaba las grandes deudas que se tenían con los antepasados. Los antiguos egipcios creían que el individuo tenía dos espíritus. Cuando fallece, uno va al más allá y el segundo queda vagando en el espacio, por lo que tiene necesidad de comer. Consideraban que este espíritu vivía en el cuerpo que ellos cuidadosamente habían embalsamado, de esta manera el espíritu podía seguir existiendo. Este espíritu era quien recibía las ofrendas.
