La incontinencia urinaria afecta a una de cada tres mujeres de todas las edades, concretamente a más 350 millones de personas en todo el mundo. Es un problema de salud mucho más frecuente de lo que en general se cree. Se considera que aproximadamente un 15% de la población femenina tiene escapes involuntarios de orina, de media, pero evidentemente si se analiza por grupos de edad, con las mujeres más jóvenes es inferior este porcentaje y a medida que avanza de edad es más frecuente. La incontinencia urinaria se define como la pérdida involuntaria de orina. Es un problema que tiene un impacto negativo en la vida de las personas y puede terminar condicionando su día a día. En la mayoría de los casos, la incontinencia urinaria tiene solución y no tiene por qué condicionar la vida de los pacientes. Existen tratamientos que van a depender de los síntomas, del tipo de incontinencia: rehabilitación del suelo pélvico, cirugía, cambio de hábitos miccionales, tratamiento farmacológico... También se recomienda bajar de peso, si se tiene sobrepeso u obesidad. Dejar de fumar, mejorar el tránsito intestinal, moderar el consumo de líquidos o hacer ejercicios para fortalecer la musculatura del suelo pélvico.
