LA SIESTA

from ssl4you Learn Spanish · host teresa sanchez

Siesta Alter a good lunch like the paella that we prepared in the last podcast I think that to sleep a nap (siesta) is a good idea. You can sleep a siesta in bed even some people wear their pyjamas but most of us sleep in the sofa usually with the TV or some music on and never more than 10 or 15 minutes. My grandfather always said that you have to sleep a siesta holding some keys in your hand and to wake up with the noise of the keys slipping out of your hand, that’s not more than 10 minutes. Not only Spanish people sleep after lunch, in tropical countries where the heat reduces work at midday the siesta is common and in Taiwan and Japan some offices have created special rooms for the workers to take a nap. Our bosses are not so considerate towards employees but the Major of a Spanish city called Plasencia announced “It’s strictly forbidden to make noise in the streets from three to five in the afternoon during summer to guarantee that people can sleep their siesta”. I’ve read somewhere that there is a biological need for afternoon naps and taking into account that people like Napoleon, Leonardo da Vinci, Edison and Einstein slept after lunch I have no doubts, the siesta is a good habit.
