El fervor religioso rápidamente puede escalar a un montón de fanáticos locos prendiendo fuego todo lo que encuentran a su paso. Fue lo que pasó en China de 1850 a 1864, cuando un grupo de fanáticos liderados por un supuesto hermano de Jesucristo hicieron una guerra para modificar totalmente la estructura de la sociedad China y exterminar a los manchúes. Su éxito fue tal que formaron su propio estado, llamado el Reino Celestial de la Gran Paz, o Tàipíng Ti?nguó. Desde el Reino Celestial de la Gran Paz crearon el conflicto más sangriento y largo del siglo XIX, y a la postre, uno de los más sangrientos de la historia. Durante esta rebelión posiblemente hayan muerto más personas que en la primera guerra mundial. Una historia extraña para nuestras sensibilidades occidentales, pero a la vez empapada de una devoción católica que no nos es rara, sirve como muestra de los extremos terribles a los que podemos llegar los seres humanos cuando la tolerancia no es parte de nuestras herramientas.
