La Voz del Valle de Estes 10 de Agosto 2026

from Estes Valley Voice Podcast · host Brett Wilson

A Week of Change, Celebration and Preservation in the Estes ValleyThere is a lot happening across the Estes Valley this week, from renewed performance spaces and summer traditions to major plans for one of the community’s historic landmarks. At the YMCA of the Rockies, two longtime performance venues have received new life through nearly $1 million in renovations. Hempel Auditorium and the Kathie Mennel Amphitheater now feature updated seating, lighting, sound systems, accessibility improvements and refreshed gathering spaces. The upgrades are about more than improving buildings. YMCA leaders hope the renovated venues will help expand arts and cultural programming beyond the busy summer months, creating more opportunities for concerts, performances and community events throughout the year. That investment in the arts comes during an already busy August in Estes Park.Over the weekend, the Estes Park Wine Festival returned to Bond Park for its 11th year, bringing together wineries, cider and mead producers, vendors, food and live music. The festival has grown into a familiar summer tradition and also serves as an example of how special events can bring visitors into town while supporting local lodging, restaurants and businesses.Perhaps the biggest conversation of the week, however, centers on the Historic Crags Lodge.New owners Josh and Melanie McCallen have shared early plans for a significant transformation of the property, including a luxury spa, expanded outdoor spaces, wedding and event facilities, parking improvements and potential treehouse-style lodging.Their vision is ambitious, but so is the responsibility that comes with owning a property that has been part of Estes Park since 1914.Community members have raised questions about preserving the lodge’s historic character, particularly its iconic windows and architectural details. There are also concerns about traffic, parking, noise, lighting and the potential impact of larger events on nearby neighborhoods. The owners have said their goal is to preserve the spirit of the Crags while creating a financially sustainable property that can survive for another century. That balance — preserving the past while preparing for the future — is one Estes Park knows well. The same theme can be seen on a larger regional scale as Larimer County begins a new chapter in waste management. The county recently opened a new transfer station and landfill as part of a $66.5 million investment in long-term waste infrastructure.County officials are also looking beyond simply disposing of trash. Future plans include increased recycling, composting and diversion of materials such as appliances, mattresses, tires and construction waste.Visit Estesvalleyvoice.com
