"Laborer's in the Vineyard" (Matthew 20:1-16), part 1/5

Send us Fan Mail“It’s not fair” sounds reasonable until Jesus tells a story that refuses to play by our rules. We open Matthew 20 and read the Parable of the Laborers in the Vineyard, where workers hired at the eleventh hour get the same wage as the ones who carried the heat of the day. That result is meant to bother us, because it exposes how quickly we confuse grace with injustice the moment someone else gets what we think they didn’t earn.We slow the parable down and focus on the line that holds the whole thing together: “Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with my own?” For us, that is the center of the message. God is not on trial in His own kingdom, and He does not need permission from our modern ideas of fairness to be good, generous, or sovereign. We talk through the hiring sequence, the negotiated penny-a-day agreement, the groups that never negotiate at all, and why the complaint only comes from the people who got exactly what they signed up for.Then we connect the story to the doctrines people love to argue about: the sovereignty of God, election, salvation by grace, and the offense many Christians feel when they hear that God chooses whom He saves.
