Some players earn a nickname. Others build a game that makes the nickname feel inevitable.Laine “The One” Lyles is doing exactly that.On this episode of SportsLifeTalk’s You Got Next, we sit down with one of the most exciting young guards in the Class of 2029—a nationally recognized prospect whose combination of athleticism, skill, competitiveness, and confidence has already made her a name to know in girls basketball and high school basketball recruiting. Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, Laine grew up in a basketball family. Her grandmother, affectionately known as Yaya, coached. Her father played. Her mother cheered. Her uncle helps with her social media and branding. Basketball wasn't something Laine simply discovered—it has been part of her world for as long as she can remember.Before most players even begin their high school careers, Laine had already experienced something many athletes spend years chasing: a state championship.As an eighth grader at The Webb School, Laine earned a starting role and helped her team capture a championship. She also remembers stepping up in the semifinals against highly regarded prospect Halen Ayers, taking on the challenge of defending an elite player on a huge stage.Now at Culver Academies in Indiana, she's building another chapter.After averaging 15.7 points per game as a freshman and earning recognition as the No. 1 player in Indiana's 2029 class, Laine isn't satisfied. In fact, the recognition only makes her want to work harder.One piece of advice from a coach has stuck with her: evaluators aren't just looking for what you CAN do—they're looking for what you CAN'T do.So Laine keeps working.She describes herself as a combo guard and three-way player who can fill gaps and make good teams even better. Her athleticism immediately jumps off the screen, but Laine makes it clear that natural ability isn't enough. She's consistently in the gym, studying film with Yaya and searching for ways to improve.Right now, that means developing her pace, strengthening her left hand, and becoming even more dangerous creating and finishing from either side of the floor.Her mentality is simple: hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard.And Laine has no plans to be the talented player who gets outworked.Her competitiveness might be her biggest weapon. Whether it's a regular-season matchup, an All-Star environment, or a championship opportunity, Laine approaches every possession like something is on the line. She says she tries to play every game like it could be her last.Recruiting is already becoming part of her journey, but when the time eventually comes to choose a college, Laine knows what matters most: family. She wants coaches who genuinely know her beyond basketball, teammates who care about one another, and an environment where relationships matter.We also get to know Laine away from the court.She enjoys cooking, sports photography, and fishing.
