Hi, I'm Holly and I'm Hailey. Welcome to Mountain Mysteries Tales from Appalachia. We love. Welcome back Jack.

Hello. Hi. Oh my god. Please hold.

Please hold. Don't we just start over? No, we got it. Keep going.

Keep going. Oh my god. This is real life baby. She wants to put her seat up.

Mine got unplugged. Mine's not working. Oh, that's a boner. Oh, that's a boner.

Oh, there we go. Okay. Okay. Are you all right?

I'm listen. I'm trying to get comfy. Okay, she told my son that she was gonna sleep here. I did and I'm told him that I would sleep.

He wanted to sleep in the tent down here, and I told him he couldn't because that was where I was gonna sleep tonight. It's a kid's pop-up tent. It's super cute. It's really cute.

It's not like popsicles on it. Anyway, he told me that I couldn't fit in it and I said something like you want a bit or like bring it on or I didn't get up. I'm gonna try it, but no, but he I could tell he was intimidated. Yeah, I feel that.

Yeah, I'll win. You are challenging a four-year-old listen. Okay, you're gonna be a wonderful mother someday. I won't let my kid win anything.

Actually, no, I don't believe in that either. I'm not the one who's like he is so my son is in karate and they have all these medals and trophies and stuff, you know, in this case, well the case was open one day and he has been talking about Do you think if you know I complete class today that I'll get a medal and I was like no you have to earn medals Like you don't just show up to class like and I give you a medal so I'll be darned to turn around kids We're in the middle that he jacked from the cat He was like what I did class today. I deserve this medal which yeah That poor sensei man, he's got tons of patience. He has to because I think that's part of the job description Yes, having all of those young boys who have so much energy.

Oh my gosh That's my nightmare and my son's favorite part is when they have to run laps. This is Yeah, I had the troubled boys in my classroom the other day that couldn't be having class that came in with me Yeah, and they actually did their work. I will give them that I'm gonna say they did they did their work I'm not there to like make them do their work. I'm like this you know, you choose not to do it This is a natural consequence.

You're gonna get a zero on it like I can't help you So good luck with that, but they got done and I talked they're talking to me about that fight Mike Tyson yeah versus what's this face the blonde guy the blonde guy so I learned a lot about professional fighting huh and I feel like your son would be good at that When I don't want him to be but yeah, I don't really want him fighting others professionally. Yeah, no, maybe not Maybe maybe something in sales or curling yeah That feels like a non-contact sport curling. Yeah, I don't know Maybe Engineer I like curling for him. Yeah, I think I'm gonna be Olympics actually he loves to swim So maybe like a Michael Phelps diving.

Yeah situation that would be cool. He has no fear so he'd be good though Yeah, he would be good. Yeah, that'd be fun. Yeah, he just launched right off that yeah Having born yeah, you and girl be yelling from the stands mom.

Did you see that mom? Look at me? I dive like yeah Go for it using he actually likes to watch people on YouTube who do different high dives at different levels Um, he thinks it's really cool. Maybe that will be his path.

It could be you never know. That's awesome I like I'm here for I'm here for him. No, I hope he doesn't get a TV. I so that you know, but not no, that's not good I feel like the concussion risk in swimming is minimal.

I don't know I mean if you're diving from that high you could always eat your head. Yeah, I don't know we'll see safety We're helmet that look weird while diving. Yeah, that'll be fine. Okay Let's talk about this episode because last week if you recall Haley talked about chimney rock Mm-hmm.

So I am here to talk about Lake lure, which is in the same area And we're also talking about ghosts because apparently this area just has a lot of spirits Lots of ghosts roaming around people are angry and they you know They haven't made it to the other side or they you know, they're just wondering and I mean but a quite picturesque place to wonder Yeah, nice. So today we are going to talk about like I said the Lake Lour area Which is in western North Carolina. This area was heavily hit by Hurricane Helene. So you know, I want to pay homage to this historic area We are gonna be talking about the Lake Lour Inn.

So this Lake Lour Inn is still standing and was able to reopen to the public on October 18th So yay, that's awesome before we start this story I want to give a shout out to an article by foot Hills Digest that will be along in my research Thanks, so I just yes Lake Lour Inn and Spa was first erected in 8 excuse me in 1927 by Dr. Lucia S'mores who talked about in last week's episode He also created Chimney Rock Park. Dr. Morris was a true visionary and wanted to create a man-made lake in the area Fun fact there is a town 50 feet below Lake Lour the town was known as Buffalo and was established in 1800s as a gold rush town Did you know that?

Yes, I knew that there was a town, but I didn't know like the history of it Yeah, and it was also a farming and mining community. It had about 150 people In what was known as Whiteside Valley on the banks of the Rocky Broad River Which is that river that lies kind of a net gorge area that we talked about last week So when the lake was impounded or you know Flooded basic right the town of Buffalo was submerged by all the water and it became a part of this like whole underwater city And what's really cool is that you can take a boat or you used to be able to to tour around the lake And you could often see the church steeple. Oh, well hearing I actually took that tour in 2005. Very cool It was amazing and you could you could see like a little bit of the steeple So neat and really 50 feet below is not that deep Kind of reminds me of remember that story you did about Lake Lanier.

Yeah in a way. Yeah, yeah Blooded cities that was super haunted anyway, so if you are hiking the Hickory Nut gorge which we talked about last week You will see a sign that reads Buffalo Cemetery 1826 It has a lot of unmarked graves and the ones that are marked have very fading headstones. Wow. Yeah All right back to the end The outside of the inn is in a Mediterranean style that faces the lake.

Mm-hmm The goal was to mirror Italian villas that overlooked the sea. Okay. Yes Inside oh is very fancy inside there are oak and pine wood floors oil paintings and bronze statues Talk about luxurious. I'm so fancy.

Haley and I would never be allowed to go there. I mean we can barely get into like a Best Western I know come maybe a motel I stayed at a Comfort in recently were you comforted? I was they had a continental breakfast with the waffle maker Up top yeah, we can't reach each other fine. Yeah, it was great One that you turn yep put the thing in an attorney turn it and that's great.

I enjoy that it was Fantastic. I love to be comforted. Yeah, and the bacon that you can just like take a whole handful these we have sausage links I like those two they were good and then like fancy eggs. I like fancy.

Yeah, I had like things in it. Yeah, it was great. That's fantastic Yeah, I love that would recommend Trip advisor five stars comfort in five stars So this one is a little bit more swanky the lobby features life-size music boxes and multiple pianos This one that I went to had a couch Smells slightly chlorine because it was connected to the indoor pool that you could see through a wall of glass and the gym But you could also see through a wall of glass. So it's pretty wild really pales in comparison I mean it was great and there's so much activity paranormal or just yeah human beings.

I did see a man fully barefoot What is not expecting that was a lot I thought you were gonna say something else now just barefoot hmm You ever seen that episode of the office where Jim and Pam get married and Kevin yeah Yeah, and they had to destroy them because they smelled so bad Yeah, so he ended up wearing tissue boxes. Mm-hmm. Yeah, that man could have resorted to that and then put his feet in the ice maker That is correct. Yeah, so another segue fun fact when Haley and I worked together the office that we worked in we used to watch the office I know there was a pub where we would go do office trivia.

This was we were not good at it No, because they actually asked really hard questions did that we were not good. We tried we tried really hard. We had a lot of fun It was great. It was a great time.

It was a great time. That's a real bummer. Yeah, we plow one Okay, so the end also has a restaurant and bar pub area So while the restaurant is the epitome of elegance the pub called the moose and goose and goose and goose is a great place to have a pint and a burger I think that would be more our speed Don't you think I think so? I mean, maybe even not a pint and a burger.

Maybe like some gummy bears. Yeah, I just like that it's called the moose and goose I do too. That's how about their moose or maybe like a great goose martini. Oh, that sounds good.

That sounds great Listen to us. We sound fancy or not. I'm not a moose. I have a moose.

I feel like eating a moose There actually is a place in Asheville called the moose cafe. Yeah, yeah, yeah They've got like down home country fucking not moose not just to clarify. They do have a big moose like statue though in there Okay, what's interesting is that dr. Morse the builder had envisioned way more than chimney rock and the end He wanted to build an airstrip for planes to fly in obviously private right a yacht club Obviously exclusive and a zoo.

Oh Fun little thing just to add in there on the side airstrip yacht club too. Yeah, well, you know because the nannies clearly need somewhere to take the children True, you know, they're out traveling. Well, I mean if I were on my yacht I would want kids there. I exactly I better be at the zoo with an any better be with the zoo with an anon I'd be afraid my kids would drown Yeah, I would be afraid we would drown.

Yeah, so we have a pretty good swimmer Barquises sink like a rock. That's so good If we do ever have children on the one responsible for saving them in the water I'm like, what would you do? Like what are you gonna do if our kids drown and he's like I give them the round too like that's terrifying So life best for everyone. Yep.

We bought him a life-est for our trip to the beach. Bless it Yeah, they were at once. Maybe like big boy floaties. Yeah.

Yeah, that would be good Some buoyancy. Yeah, because these things like an actual rock. That's so sad. Yeah Did he have you see try to learn how to swim?

Oh, yeah, just tits about him. Well, that's rough. Yeah, well good luck with that. He's a little dense Not mentally though.

No, he says well sometimes Okay back to the yacht club the fly-in and the zoo So he wanted to have it as a complete resort town where the rich and the famous could stay play and relax Sounds right up our alley. Sure does. Unfortunately the Great Depression dashed all those dreams and they never came into fruition How's depression will do it? It will do it.

It will definitely will. That's great. I love that. Exactly.

If you've ever been to this area It is truly stunning. There is a little beach area with a massive slide the boat tour as I mentioned It's a really great place very picturesque and the mountains are you know all around so you've got like They have this area called the beach which is this like sandy area Like I said right in front of lake lore and then you can play in the lake and then as you look around It's surrounded by all these gorgeous mountains these lavish homes like it is really really pretty Um, so hopefully one day they will rebuild everything and y'all can go and visit if you have it during World War II The inn provided 5000 airmen with a place to stay before they returned to the front lines Well, I actually didn't know that. It's pretty cool. It also served as a convalescent hospital for those wounded soldiers Yeah, many famous people stayed at the inn including Haley one of our favorites f Scott Fitzgerald This is ongoing if you're new to the podcast, please listen to earlier episodes Reference we referenced him several times.

Yes. Yeah, I'm convinced he is the murderer in 90 percent of our stories. Probably. Yeah, yeah, especially our historic ones I think so.

Yep. Yep. We know it. We know it.

What do you think exactly? Along with f Scott Fitzgerald also came president Calvin Coolidge and many famous actors and writers of the time Yes, the great president Calvin Coolidge, and I'm sure accomplished many things Not really I don't think he did not he didn't she really didn't know you know he was there. He was there He was there. He was there and he was our president.

That's correct That's about all I know about it. Yep. Yeah, he wasn't one of those that made a big Splash, you know, right? Maybe a good thing.

Yeah, maybe to come out of the office and just be like kind of low-key. I like it Yeah, I'm into that. Can we get back to that? It would be great great great.

So in 1986 while filming dirty dancing That's right. The movie dirty dancing was filmed in Lake Lour the cast including Jennifer Gray and Patrick Swayze stayed at the end Yep, they filmed a lot of that out there. They sure did. It's pretty cool.

Also watch that movie While there are many famous patrons there are also some intriguing deceased guests who haunt this luxurious hotel Not a bad place to haunt. No, I mean quite lovely. We'd haunt it. Oh, no.

Maybe at the moose goose. Yeah, like give me another sesperilla Yeah We're a moose. I'm hungry. And a goose.

And a goose. You eat the goose. I'll have a moose. I don't want the moose moose or goose.

Oh, well According to legend in the 1930s a newly married husband and wife were honeymoon at the hotel When it abruptly came to an end Bum-bum-bum apparently an argument ensued in the couple's room So they were staying in what now is room 217 and 218. Okay, but back then it was just 217 It was just like one large room. Anyway, the groom accused his new wife of flirting with a police officer down in the lobby And again, it's 1930s. So it could have just been she dropped something and he was like, oh here you go miss And she said thank you and you know lost his mind.

That's it. Yeah soon There was a screaming match and the husband lost control and killed his wife. Oh my god. Yeah It is said that those staying in rooms 217 and 218 often hear blood curdling screams in the middle of the night that appear to be female That's gotta be unsettling I would say so we're gonna wait for them.

Yeah, either like wow Somebody's on their honeymoon or uh Or if the honeymoon has ended to yikes. That's here either or Either or one of your either scenario Listen, I want to you know have my husband put on his breathe right strip. Maybe a CPAP We are middle-aged and just you know just take a night night. Yeah, she wants sleep.

Yeah, definitely Anybody who's a parent out there you definitely want to sleep Guests also smell the overwhelming stench of roses that walked into the room Apparently it was reported that you know because they were honeymooning people had sent them a lot of roses and Gradulatory gifts so they were all over the rooms. Yeah, that's why you smell the scent of roses So they also report seeing a young woman wearing white through the corridors of the hotel The ghost will stop when she comes to the room where she took her last breath Oh, then the spirit will once again move towards the hall like oh, nope not in there A former maid reported that there was always long dark hair found in the bathroom of 217 even if the room had been empty Sounds like shoddy housekeeping It could just be blaming. Yeah, like I missed that that was weird. It's weird.

It's weird. It's like a there were bed bugs, but it was the ghost for sure Yeah, they don't tell them found like no, but I'm terrified too. Oh, no, I like people's hair Oh, oh, they said that um Stains I've seen a lot of stains. Yeah I did find a pube once that was unsettling.

Wow. Yeah, I found like somebody's hair in the shower that just barely was you know missed Right, you know, whatever and it just reminds you again like if you're not the first one to shower here. No, it is kind of Yeah, you know, when you think about it like that it is like maybe I should have brought shower shoes I know you always kind of wonder was that comfort in clean? It was clean.

It's good. It's very good. Um Did do my bed bug check. Yeah, it was clear good.

So good. It was good Did you bring a black light? No, no Never No, no, no, no, I would never yeah, because goodness no, you'd never know what you go by. Oh no where Well, it's you know, say if I stayed a hotel and wind up pregnant and you know the times match up.

Well, no, no, no Anyway, uh like I said, she said she found a long dark hair In the bathroom. No one had been in the room. She also said that the television was always on and staticy even if it was unplugged That's creepy. Yeah, that happened to me in college where the fan was oscillating back and forth and my roommate said Uh, you know, why are you doing that?

Why are you having on the high speed and I was like, I don't My hand that was terrifying. That's creepy So it was also reported that her maid cart was overturned at a time when no one was on that floor So it was that weird period of like checkout 11 and before everybody checks in at four So she was doing her maid service and her cart was just overturned It could just be you know somebody pull in a prank to or maybe you pissed off the wrong person who knows but She definitely thought it was the ghost. That's crazy. So clearly the young ghost bride Wanted someone to notice that she's still lingered in the hotel.

Hmm and that kind of makes you sad in a way Like no one was there to help her in the 30s. Maybe she's like seeking out help I don't know a local uh was at the hotel when he reported seeing a burst of smoke with a specter of a woman inside wearing a long white gown Actually, I figure for my next wedding. That's how I want to come in Versus smoke burst of smoke wearing long white gown kind of like a wrecking ball. I want to just come on in.

I like it Now entering the ring Wayne 115 pounds, that's kind Holly I don't know the last time. I think I may have weighed 115 pounds in the sixth grade Oh, yeah, yeah Speaking of which my sports bra I'm wearing currently is cutting into my skin Oh, you can take it off. I want to judge you. I'm not gonna judge you.

I appreciate that Yeah, in fact, my neighbor just had a baby and um, I've seen her boobs more recently than I've seen my own. So Yeah, impressive. Yeah, okay Okay, uh, it is also believed that world war two soldiers who died at the end when it was a makeshift hospital Wander the halls in a state of discombobulation Man Hate to be discombobulated. I just want to be populated.

I mean, I feel undiscombobulated all the time But what is it? What's it like to be populated? I don't sound Sounds sexual it does and also frightening I have an image of my head of what populated means, but I'm not gonna get into that mine involves like water like bobbing for apples Was it what I was gonna say? Thanks.

We're scared Well, could you go drown? Yeah, that is scary. No, I was thinking of something else, but okay, my mind goes to dark places We'll talk about later. Yeah, okay.

This is not this plan. This is not a bad way So they are roaming the halls again, and I don't know if Because you think about it like does your soul just kind of get trapped in the place where you die Do you go back and haunt the people who pissed you off? Like do you go back to your home? Even though you didn't die there like they're so like what are the rules?

I don't know I don't think there are any They just do whatever they want to do what you want. Okay But I think maybe maybe you start out in the place that you died and then once you realize there's no rules You can kind of go wherever you want. I like that But sometimes people are just like, you know, it feels like a rule and I'm gonna stick to it Or it's so grand they didn't really get to enjoy it in their life. Right.

So my soul and I like it exactly I like it hit me up. Let's go to the moose and goose moose and goose So it has been reported that the basement is one of the scariest places usually this Oh for sure, except for mine mine's lovely mine's terrifying. Yes, yours is absolutely terrifying So they say that a young boy is heard laughing running and bouncing a ball back and forth in the basement in the basement Why? Well, so the only boy that was known to have died anywhere near there was in 1985 There was a young boy who drowned in one of the pools Hmm, but it's also thought that it possibly could be a young man who died at the beach in front of the lake and just decided to go to the basement Why wouldn't you?

I guess I mean sure why not besides the little boy There is also a not so benevolent spirit in the basement. Hmm. It is said that there is a spirit of an angry man named Sam Sam can be heard calling out to you by yelling her And then he pulls your hair straight upward like straight up. Yeah, yeah above my head.

Yeah, yeah, and like pulls it I mean even ghosts have kinks. I guess you know I was gonna say it's a little kinky And then yeah Let's ask for some consent Have a conversation about like a safe word safe words like boo, you know very Kestry how's spirit? You know, maybe it's a holy water handy. Just in case it gets too rough.

Yeah All right, so it's believed that Sam likes to screw around with the employees and will often move the portraits in the lobby to other places in the hotel Even in the basement making it kind of a game of like hide and seek sounds like something I would do for sure I was both a living person and a ghost. I better get drafted the things in my house. Yeah, you should be in the same side. Yeah, yeah Who so another thing these ghosts like to do is they lock the hotel room doors from the inside So this end likes to stay true to its past and has like, you know The regular old locks with you know key and chains rather than like a key card So staff will often find that the doors were locked on the other side and they struggled to get them open So that's fun.

And who else could have done that? Great ghost ghost ghost exactly or you know maids who just Go out the window. So exactly Well, maybe there's connecting rooms. Maybe that could be an answer.

Sure. All right So if you decide to spend some time at this famous and stunning in do know you won't be alone It's kind of nice. Does it feel uh, reassuring to know that? Creepy a ghost with kinks delightful There has been reports individuals who came with you know those little boxes.

It was like sound boxes things Communicate with the deal so they heard someone say stop and then they like kept on of course because you know when someone does stop Why not continue on and so then the ghost says Please stop you must go go and so finally they pick up their shit and they left but Just saying it wouldn't take me that long. No, I guess let's go. I can go where but I got you I will go Somewhere that's not here. Exactly.

Yeah, exactly. He will you'll plow on. Yeah. Yeah That is the story now I am of the understanding that you had some little tidbits on the floor that maybe I didn't share so I thought I'd get back to those uh little notes over here That's a good idea and just see kind of where I had some information.

Let's try that. Let's see here Let's see Now I just kind of had some information about uh some fish I was not expecting that just you know a little bit of info about Yeah, lake lor there's about some fish a lot of fish in there Um, but oh, okay. Here we go. Here's some information about the the fish.

We got the smell of roses. We talked about that Okay, so the what are the bottomless pools? Yes, so actually one of the boys that drowned was in one of the bottomless pools in 1985. Yep Um, they think that he's the one on the basement.

Yes. Yeah. Yeah, um, let's see And then the flowering bridge. Yes, it said to be Haunted by Clementine.

This is a beautiful young woman who was water skiing in the 1960s. Um, she lost her balance and was hurled into the bridge Oh, and died. That feels like a lot. Now her spirit lives there So people call it to call it Clementine's bridge.

Well, I want something with my name I mean if I die horrific horrifically somewhere, I I would like it named it You know if I get launched off of something and smack into a sign poster bridge At least name it after me. It's true If you are hearing what sounds like a Ceiling coming down. Ceiling coming down. It is my son upstairs on his scooter scootering He won't go to bed.

So the scootering is happening. I have been up and down the stairs about 22 times tonight It's a lot. I have burned a lot of calories. So, you know, you can eat more of these little breadsticks.

It's great. Uh, all right So you were talking about the bottomless pools. I was and then we talked about Clementine's bridge And getting Wacked into the bridge. Yes.

So yeah, if I get whacked into something you better name it after me. Fantastic. Yeah I might right get run over by a boy on a scooter. I'm thinking of it might also happen to me as well So if uh, if that's the way I go out, please name that scooter after me.

Absolutely. We'll call it the haly. Great What model did you get? The haly?

It's got your face on it. Oh, nice. It's sweet. Yeah There it goes.

There it goes again. Oh, we'll get better wrap this up. Oh, all right See, we make even all right, y'all. Oh, wait, we didn't tell that.
