In Northern Tanzania, a blood-red lake with a mirror-perfect surface lures birds to their deaths—then preserves their bodies as calcified statues. Lake Natron's caustic waters can burn human skin in seconds, reach temperatures of 140°F, and have a pH almost as high as ammonia. Yet millions of flamingos breed here, protected by water so toxic it kills everything else that touches it. When photographer Nick Brandt discovered the lake's shoreline littered with petrified birds frozen in lifelike poses, the world learned about nature's most beautiful death trap.
