Lake Ontario Renamed to Lake America | Calgary News

Lake Ontario just got a controversial new name: “Lake America.” Triggered by a U.S. executive order, Google Maps updated its system over the weekend, causing Canadian sites like Metrolinx and Hydro One to briefly display the new name — sparking backlash from both Canadian officials and some U.S. politicians. Prime Minister Mark Carney defended the lake’s original Indigenous name, meaning “the lake is beautiful, the lake is big,” noting it’s over 400 years old. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Senator Bernie Sanders also voiced opposition, arguing Americans don’t want this change — proving this isn’t just a map glitch, it’s a geopolitical flashpoint.
