This is a deeply personal and revealing piece, and I doubt I could have done it without the benefit of a decade or more of psychoanalysis.  Yes, I spend four hours a week on the couch, asking why this, rather than that. As I like to joke, I put the psycho in psychoanalysis. I recommend that anyone dealing with other people's troubles get into analysis. It is a lifeline that will help you dive deeply into the well of another's sorrow without being swallowed whole by it. If personal stuff offends you, skip this one.
