Lan Xang

In this episode, we explore the Kingdom of Lan Xang, the powerful Southeast Asian realm founded in 1353 by King Fa Ngum and remembered as the foundation of modern Laos. Known as the “kingdom of a million elephants,” Lan Xang grew into a major political and military force through expansion, dynastic rule, and strategic conflict with neighboring powers such as Burma and Ayutthaya. We look at how Theravada Buddhism became central to the kingdom’s identity, shaping its culture, governance, and artistic traditions. The episode also highlights Lan Xang’s Golden Age under King Sourigna Vongsa, when the arts flourished and European trade contacts began, before internal succession struggles led to its fragmentation into smaller regional kingdoms by 1707.
