Lancet July 2026 Neurodegenerative mortality among National Football League Players
from This Week In Medicine · host A.I.O.
This comprehensive study analyzes the long-term health outcomes of nearly 20,000 professional athletes to determine how repetitive head impacts influence fatal brain diseases. While National Football League players generally live longer than the average person, they face a disproportionately high risk of dying from conditions like dementia, ALS, and Parkinson’s disease. By comparing decades of sports data against national death records, the researchers found that these athletes are nearly four times more likely to suffer from neurodegenerative mortality than the general public. Even after adjusting for the fact that these players are healthier in other categories, the evidence strongly suggests that their professional exposure to head trauma is the primary driver behind this increased risk of cognitive decline.
