Language of the Human Experience from Brene Brown's Atlas of the Heart & Meaningful Themes from Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus

from Beautiful Shifts · host Lindsay & Shantil

Today we chat about some recent books we've read (some of you may have read along!). Whether you've read these or not, we've structured this episode so you can listen and take away some highlights and meaning from each book.   We start with Atlas of the Heart by Brene Brown, which draws on her research over two decades, mapping connection and language of the human experience. We share a few words/emotions that stood out to us and discuss takeaways. We hope this can be a helpful and fun recap, and there's plenty more to dive into if you haven't read it yet!   Next, we chat about Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus, a novel we both read this month that follows the lovable, smart, inspiring character Elizabeth Zott. We loved this book and talk about some meaningful themes such as womanhood, motherhood, family, friendship, and religion and spirituality. We also read some listener thoughts/submissions! We tried not to include spoilers if you haven't read it, and also hope if you did this will be a fun discussion.    We hope you enjoy this chat about some great books and takeaways!    ............   We hope you enjoyed this conversation! We'd love if you'd subscribe and follow along. You can find us on Instagram @beautifulshifts_podcast and on Facebook here where you can find more on the show, guests, books, etc.   Thank you for listening!

My Messy, Human Life Sheena Grund A new adventure of being alive in this messy, difficult, and beautiful human life... topics to be discussed at different times: life, unlearning, disability, faith, love, Spirit... really all the things! It'll be messy (as in all over the place), but that literally in the title of the podcast, so hopefully it's not a surprise! Also, life is unpredictable and beautiful, which I hope this podcast will be, too. Wherever Life Takes Us whereverlifetakesuss Join three best friend as they explore this beautiful world! Half Ties kwamenabrace Half-ties is a conversation series on the funny, beautiful and sometimes challenging moments that interracial couples experience being with somebody who’s culturally different from them.Hosted by creative couple Olivia & Kwamena, we listen to stories about growing up with racism and prejudice; falling in love and meeting the in-laws; navigating difficult conversations within the family and in society, and how these couples make their relationship work and what they actively choose to pass down to the next generation. C.S. Lewis's The Last Battle St. Philip's Church: Charleston, SC Come join us on Wednesday nights as we explore the riches of C.S. Lewis’s marvelous book The Last Battle, which is the last of The Chronicles of Narnia. It is a remarkable book on multiple levels and was awarded the Carnegie Medal back in the 1950s when it was first published. The Last Battle has some themes in common with The Great Divorce and That Hideous Strength that will make it an excellent follow-up to those two books, and like them, it has some remarkable resonance with things going on in today’s culture. It is a book that is both theologically rich and poignantly beautiful in its writing, and it can help equip us to live boldly for Christ in a culture that has lost its way. (Although this book is the last of The Chronicles of Narnia, it can stand on its own and it is not necessary to have read the other books for this class.)
