Every so often a book comes along  that deserves a special mention- So here then is a playlist based on, or at least influenced by the brilliant – ‘Last Train to Memphis’ – the rise of Elvis Presley by Peter Guralnick.   ‘Unrivalled…(Elvis) steps from these pages, you can feel him breathe, this book cancels out all others’-Bob Dylan.   -Brought to you by the slippery1. recommended readin’ an recommended listenin….an the tracklistin goes-   1,HANK SNOW-I DON’T HURT ANYMORE. 2,THE DOMINOES-HARBOUR LIGHTS. 3,LEON PAYNE-I LOVE YOU BECAUSE. 4,KOKOMO ARNOLD-MILK COW BLUES. 5,ARTHUR CRUDUP-THAT’S ALL RIGHT. 6,THE BOSWELL SISTERS-BLUE MOON. 7,LONNIE JOHNSON-TOMORROW NIGHT. 8,BILL MONROE & HIS BLUEGRASS BOYS-BLUE MOON OF KENTUCKY (ORIG SLOW VERS). 9,PATTI PAGE-I DON’T CARE IF THE SUN DON’T SHINE. 10,JIMMY WAKELY-I’LL NEVER LET YOU GO. 11,WYNONIE HARRIS-GOOD ROCKIN’ TONIGHT. 12,THE SHELTON BROTHERS-JUST BECAUSE. 13,ARTHUR GUNTER-BABY LETS PLAY HOUSE. 14,RAY CHARLES-IGOT A WOMAN. 15,THE EAGLES-TRYIN TO GET TO YOU. 16,CHARLIE FEATHERS-I FORGOT TO REMEMBER TO FORGET (DEMO). 17,BILLY EMERSON-WHEN IT RAINS, IT POURS. 18,RED FOLEY,PEACE IN THE VALLEY. 19,HANK SNOW-A FOOL SUCH AS I. 20,LITTLE JUNIOR PARKER-MYSTERY TRAIN. 21,THE CARTER FAMILY-ARE YOU LONESOME TONIGHT. 22,THE CLOVERS-FOOL FOOL FOOL. 23,THE INK SPOTS-THAT’S WHEN YOUR HEARTACHE BEGINS. Runnin’ time 105ish- A couple a notes on the songs-most of the songs included here were songs actually recorded by Elvis, although a couple are songs that he just played/sang in auditions or rehearsals. Most are the original versions. Although  a few like ‘Harbour Lights’, ‘Are You Lonesome Tonight’ an ‘Blue Moon’ were standards that had already been recorded by several different artists that Elvis would’ve heard at the time. An lastly the Charlie Feathers demo- I don’t think it was ever released or even recorded by C.F until some time later? It appears that it was just sung to Elvis an the band at the session? I can’t seem to find out just when the C.F vers WAS recorded/ released? I’ve always found this quite odd, as it was perfectly normal around that time, an especially at Sun, for songs to be sung by at least a couple a different artists? So obviously being such a great song, what stopped C.F recording/ releasing it at the time? – if anyone could shed any light? …………. please let us know at DTB! Thanx S1.
