Lauren, 29, from Wakefield and Rothwell in Yorkshire and The Humber, wanted to train as a nurse to serve her local NHS trust. But Health Education England's training budget was capped by Treasury spending limits that treated healthcare workforce investment as a cost to minimise rather than the means to get qualified staff onto understaffed wards. The training places existed. People like Lauren were ready to fill them. What was missing was a government willing to fund the posts needed. This episode explores how Westminster's artificial spending constraints create nurse shortages in communities that desperately need healthcare workers.
