Por Pablo Callejón Conocíamos muy poco del coronavirus, pero sabíamos demasiado de nosotros mismos. No como un colectivo homogéneo que algunos describen bajo la generalidad de “la gente”, sino en esa compleja heterogeneidad en las que también podemos ser capaces de mostrarnos como seres injustos, prejuiciosos, irracionales y egoístas. La emoción del aplauso a trabajadores de la salud puede reunirnos a la misma hora y en los mismos lugares donde exigimos que nadie se atreva a meterse con nuestras libertades de contagio. Nos jactamos por desestimar la enfermedad y al poco tiempo, caemos en el miedo y la desesperanza si algún ser querido pierde el ritmo de la respiración por el virus. Hemos sido capaces de exigir el prospecto de vectores adenovirales de una vacuna, aunque conservemos en la alacena los remedios que utilizamos sin prescripción médica. Hicimos lo que pudimos y casi siempre, actuamos como somos. Las jerarquías y desigualdades sociales no mejoraron por la pandemia. No vamos hacia un mundo mejor. Los que menos tienen tuvieron más dificultades para acceder al agua que desinfecta y al jabón que elimina las secuelas del Covid. La pasaron peor cuando se contagiaron y les costó hallar un lugar en sus hogares donde no contagiar a los otros. Tuvieron más temor de perder sus empleos y se quedaron fácilmente sin trabajo. Fueron estigmatizados por recibir una asistencia social aunque los más ricos obtuvieran miles de millones de pesos en subsidios y garantías del Estado. No resultamos mejores, ni más justos, ni más solidarios...

Rania Awaad Muslim Central Dr. Rania Awaad M.D., is a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Stanford University School of Medicine where she is the Director of the Stanford Muslim Mental Health & Islamic Psychology Lab as well as Stanford University’s Affiliate Chaplain. In the community, she serves as the Executive Director of Maristan.org, a holistic mental health nonprofit serving Muslim communities, and the Director of The Rahmah Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to educating Muslim women and girls. In addition, she is faculty of Islamic Psychology at Cambridge Muslim College and The Islamic Seminary of America.She is also a Senior Fellow for Yaqeen Institute and the Institute of Social Policy and Understanding. Prior to studying medicine, she pursued classical Islamic studies in Damascus, Syria, and holds certifications (ijaza) in the Qur’an, Islamic Law, and other branches of the Islamic Sciences. Mohammad Qutub Muslim Central Dr. Mohammad Qutub is an Islamic scholar with several decades of experience as a teacher and orator. He completed his Master’s and PhD degrees in Uṣūl al-Dīn and Comparative Religion at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), and has several Ijāzahs (licenses) and certificates in Qur’an, Hadith, etc. He has spoken internationally in the Middle East, the U.S., and Southeast Asia and regularly holds intensive seminars and university lectures. His passions and research revolve around: Islamic thought and history, Qur’anic Tafsīr, scientific Iʿjāz (inimitability) in the Qur’an and Sunnah, and comparative religion. He teaches students of all different ages and backgrounds in-person and online. He is also an engineer by profession with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the U.S., and extensive experience in the field of Industrial Gases.
