Leaders and Followers
from Hope-Full Living · host Mary Manz Simon
No college class or single “life lesson” prepared me for being old. But I’ve learned that adapting leadership skills, honed through a lifetime of service, still work! For example, a list of “characteristics of a successful leader” is often topped by a single word: listen. Today, paying attention might require extra focus and a hearing aid, but active listening leads to understanding. Being a team player is also a lifetime skill. Jesus chose helpers with a group-oriented mindset. We might share ways to promote synergy or collaborative problem solving. Although shepherds and their flocks are used as examples throughout the Bible, God doesn’t expect us to practice herd mentality. He equipped us with judgment and the ability to make wise choices. We’ve perfected these skills through years of experience. Today we might not chair a strategic planning meeting, but being a faithful follower allows us to find meaning throughout life.
