Leaders Eat Last: The Franchise Growth Model Built on Internal Promotion w/ Carlos Lopez (Part 2) - Ep. 52

from No Trade Secrets · host Jarome McKenzie

Welcome back to the playbook! We’re diving back in with Carlos Lopez, the visionary leader behind the rapidly expanding Tropical Juice Bar. In PART ONE, Carlos shared his powerful immigrant story and the foundational principles that got the business off the ground. In PART TWO, we shift from foundation to execution, breaking down the exact systems that fuel their culture and growth. How do you build a leadership pipeline that turns entry-level employees into successful franchise owners? What’s the one trait that matters more than experience in every single hire? This is the blueprint for scaling with integrity.⏮️ Catch Up on PART ONE💡 Unlocking the PlaybookBuild an Internal Ownership Pipeline: Instead of just promoting employees, create a clear path for them to become owners. Carlos shares the story of a team member who grew into a regional manager and is now months away from opening her own franchise. They didn't just approve her; they actively helped her fix her finances and qualify for the necessary loans, proving that the ultimate "promotion" is ownership. This creates an unparalleled level of buy-in and inspires the entire team.Hire Personality, Train for Skill: Experience can be a liability if it’s not paired with the right attitude. Carlos’s team prioritizes hiring people who genuinely enjoy serving others, regardless of their resume. The technical skills of the job can be taught, but a true passion for service is innate. This ensures every customer interaction is authentic and prevents managers from having to force a smile or a "thank you."Leaders Must Earn Respect in the Trenches: No one gets to be a manager without first getting their hands dirty. Carlos's non-negotiable rule is that every single leader, even those with prior management experience, must start by washing dishes, making drinks, and serving customers. This proves they understand the work, have high standards, and are willing to do any job, which is the only way to earn the genuine respect of their team.🤫 The No Trade SecretLead yourself as if other people always come first. Many leaders worry about their own success, but if you truly take care of your team, they will take care of you. As the saying goes, "leaders eat last." If you ensure your team is fed—with opportunity, respect, and support—they will see how much you care and ensure you never starve.🗣️ Words to Build On"We like people who enjoy serving others because that is the job. The job is serving other people and it's not complicated." – Carlos Lopez"I know that if they need to do the work, they're going to do it. If they need to get their hands dirty, they're going to get their hands dirty as well." – Carlos Lopez"If you take care of your team, your team is gonna feed you. There's no reason for you to be or to think that you're gonna starve." – Carlos Lopez👤 About Carlos Carlos David Lopez is a Hispanic leader and restaurateur from Sabana Grande de Boya, Monte Plata in the Dominican Republic.
