Leadership, Legacy and Mentoring with Jon Schwartz

from Warriors at Work · host Jeanie Coomber

Leadership, Legacy and Mentoring with Jon Schwartz“Mentorship is really about one thing, removing barriers for success.” - Jon Schwartz It’s no surprise that those with mentors at work report that they are happier in their position, are less likely to leave their job and are more likely to say that they are well paid whether it’s true or not. Yet not every workplace is intentional about leading through mentorship. In today’s episode I dive deep into the power of mentoring, benefits of mentoring in the workplace, leadership and legacy with Jon Schwartz. Today’s Guest: Jon Schwartz is the host of The Sports Mentoring Project, a podcast that explores the symbiotic relationship between mentors and mentees and features some of the most compelling personalities in sports telling their own stories about those who buoyed their careers and how they’re now doing the same for others. Schwartz has more than 25 years of public/media relations and corporate communications experience on many sides of the sports industry – from club and league, to agency and in-house at major sports sponsors. Schwartz is an adjunct professor at NYU in the Preston Robert Tisch Institute for Global Sport. He is also a member of the Advisory Board for Povich Center for Sports Journalism at the University of Maryland“The Sports Mentoring Project Podcast”: https://open.spotify.com/show/0O8zDdXFWl3Hkg3n7C4KY4 1:17 Introduction to Jon Schwartz5:07 The story of why Jon started the mentorship program, his personal experience with a mentor & the power of “paying it back”.9:52 Jon recaps his conversation with Laura Wronski from survey monkey about her series of surveys on happiness in the workplace with a unique focus on mentorship. 10:26 Effects of mentorship in the workplace. 11:35 How mentorship impacts younger generations & minorities12:00 Why money isn’t the issue when it comes to businesses implementing more mentorship in the workplace.12:47 Why supervisors are struggling to provide mentorship. 14:29 Organic Mentoring vs. Assigned Mentoring/NASCAR Culture & Mentoring Program17:28 How to reach Millennials through Mentorship20:11 Finding Diversity in Mentorship: Jon shares his experience with mentoring as an adjunct professor and connecting students to other professionals to increase the network of his students.22:08 You can’t force mentorship.
