Even more telling, 77% worry they'll lose respect if they're too empathetic. But here's the truth – leaning into empathy doesn't diminish your authority; it enhances your effectiveness. When we understand and manage our own emotions while recognizing those of our team members, we create spaces where innovation thrives. What's particularly exciting is how the corporate landscape is evolving. Companies like Cisco Systems, Ford Motor Company, and Pegasystems are investing in management training specifically focused on empathy. Many organizations are implementing flexible work arrangements, mental health services, and diversity measures to support the diverse needs of their employees. Pauline Ploquin, President and Partner at marketing agency Struck, notes that "When you have a pandemic, a social justice movement, and a mental health crisis at once, companies have no choice but to embrace empathy." For us as women leaders, this shift presents both an opportunity and a relief. Historically, expectations of empathetic leadership have created a double bind for women executives.
