Learner protection data

from The Daily Discourse · host SAfm

Across South Africa, schools are collecting and handling vast amounts of sensitive information of 12 million learners. This includes ID numbers and addresses to academic results and even parents’ financial details. This data should be protected with the highest levels of care. Some questions are being raised by school governing bodies about whether our current systems, particularly SA-SAMS and its modernisation, are truly keeping this data safe. This morning, we’re asking: Who is really protecting our children’s information? Are schools being given the tools and freedom they need to manage data responsibly? Joining us to discuss this critical issue, we are joined by… Guest: Bheki Mpanzi - Chief Director: Information and Management Systems at the Department of Basic Education Guest: Riaan van der Bergh - Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Federation of Governing Bodies of South African Schools (FEDSAS) Guest : Shiloh Naiken - Project Executive at the National Education Collaboration Trust (SA-SAMS)
