Leaving Orthodox Judaism, a Marriage, and Finding Peace on the Other Side with Tova Mirvis

from Beautiful Shifts · host Lindsay & Shantil

Tova is the author of the memoir The Book of Separation as well as three novels including a national bestseller. Today Tova joins us to share about her journey questioning and ultimately leaving Orthodox Judaism as well as her marriage, which led to writing The Book of Separation, a memoir about heeding your inner compass, even if it means walking away from the only life you've ever known. She shares what this journey has been like and how she has found peace and beauty on the other side.   Tova is extremely thoughtful and wise and we loved this rich conversation with her. We are excited to share her story with you as part of our current faith series and very grateful she took the time to talk with us.   Tova's books include her memoir The Book of Separation as well as three novels, Visible City, The Outside World, and The Ladies Auxiliary, which was a national bestseller. Her latest novel We Would Never will be published in February. Her essays have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe Magazine, and Real Simple, and her fiction has been broadcast on NPR. She lives in Newton, MA with her family.   Find Tova at www.tovamirvis.com where you can find descriptions and links for her books, and on Instagram @tovamirvis.    Thank you for listening!

Wherever Life Takes Us whereverlifetakesuss Join three best friend as they explore this beautiful world! Half Ties kwamenabrace Half-ties is a conversation series on the funny, beautiful and sometimes challenging moments that interracial couples experience being with somebody who’s culturally different from them.Hosted by creative couple Olivia & Kwamena, we listen to stories about growing up with racism and prejudice; falling in love and meeting the in-laws; navigating difficult conversations within the family and in society, and how these couples make their relationship work and what they actively choose to pass down to the next generation. C.S. Lewis's The Last Battle St. Philip's Church: Charleston, SC Come join us on Wednesday nights as we explore the riches of C.S. Lewis’s marvelous book The Last Battle, which is the last of The Chronicles of Narnia. It is a remarkable book on multiple levels and was awarded the Carnegie Medal back in the 1950s when it was first published. The Last Battle has some themes in common with The Great Divorce and That Hideous Strength that will make it an excellent follow-up to those two books, and like them, it has some remarkable resonance with things going on in today’s culture. It is a book that is both theologically rich and poignantly beautiful in its writing, and it can help equip us to live boldly for Christ in a culture that has lost its way. (Although this book is the last of The Chronicles of Narnia, it can stand on its own and it is not necessary to have read the other books for this class.)
