Lee Gale Gruen: Reinventing Yourself in Your Retirement Years
from MaxAMAZING Your Retirement with Len Hayduchok
After 37 years as a probation officer, she retired and woke up with no identity and no purpose, until a random senior acting class changed everything. Discover how she built a whole new life in her 60s and beyond. In this episode, Len Hayduchok and guest Lee Gale Gruen discuss:Loss of identity and purpose after retirementFalling into acting and overcoming stage frightTranslating lifelong skills into a surprising new careerPractical ways to explore purpose and opportunities in retirementFacing fear, self-imposed limitations, and “doing it anyway.”Key Takeaways:Retirement often triggers a profound loss of identity and purpose, and those emotions of feeling lost, frightened, and disoriented are more common than people admit.Skills and experiences from a long career—such as understanding people’s emotions and motivations—can unexpectedly become the foundation for a completely different second career.New passions are often discovered not through grand plans, but by experimenting, trying classes or volunteer roles, and being willing to feel uncomfortable at first.Understanding your own personality (introvert vs. extrovert, comfort level with people, etc.) helps you choose retirement activities that genuinely fit you and are sustainable. Many of the barriers people face in retirement are self-imposed fears carried from childhood; intentionally “doing it anyway” when something feels scary can be life-changing.“You don't have to think of retirement as an end. You can think of it as a beginning.” – Lee Gale GruenAbout the guest, Lee Gale Gruen:Lee Gale Gruen (whose first name is “Lee Gale”) lives in the East San Francisco Bay Area and grew up in Los Angeles, California.
