Legacy of 911: DEA’s New War on Terror | Miami News

Miles Aley, DEA Special Agent in Charge in Miami, traces his mission to combat terrorism directly to the September 11 attacks—events that reshaped his career and the agency’s focus. Once a police officer in Alabama, he was galvanized by the tragedy to join the DEA, where the mission evolved from drug enforcement to dismantling the financial lifelines of global terror networks. Witnessing firsthand the aftermath in New York and terrorist training sites in South Florida, Aley champions cross-agency collaboration as essential to modern counterterrorism. Today, DEA Miami prioritizes partnerships with all law enforcement, viewing every badge as part of a unified defense against evolving threats—from Caribbean drug smuggling to Pacific operations—all fueled by intelligence sharing and forged in the memory of that defining day.
