Legal Weed Could Bring in $58 Billion More | TDR Cannabis in 5

States have generated more than $15.8 billion in cannabis tax revenue over the past five years, and according to a newly updated federal report, the numbers are still growing. In this episode of TDR Cannabis in 5, host Shadd Dales breaks down reporting from Marijuana Moment on new U.S. Census Bureau data tracking cannabis excise tax revenue since Q3 2021.In just the most recent 12-month period, states and D.C. collected an estimated $3.55 billion in combined cannabis tax revenue, this despite marijuana still remaining federally illegal, still facing banking limitations, and still dealing with punitive taxation under 280E. In Q2 2026 alone, states brought in nearly $988 million, led by California at $161 million, Washington State at $153 million, and Michigan at over $110 million. Going back to when the Census Bureau started tracking in 2021, California has generated more than $3.3 billion total, with Washington State close behind at $2.3 billion.The episode also covers why national totals dipped in fiscal 2023, tied specifically to California eliminating its cultivation tax to compete with the illicit market, and how newer markets like Minnesota and Delaware are just starting to contribute. On a per-capita basis, Washington and Montana lead the country at more than $50 per resident annually, driven by excise rates of 37% and 20% respectively.
