Jackson, along with the feature film debuts of Martin Lawrence and Rosie Perez, the film was a hit at Cannes and a critical and commercial success. Widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made, its release was also marked by controversy over its content and depictions of racism, with some commentators expressing the fear that audiences might riot after seeing it.
