Leiermann Trio - Schubert Piano Trio no. 2 in Eb

from Ngā Pātaka Kōrero - Auckland Libraries · host Auckland Libraries

On Thursday 21st January 2021 the Leiermann Trio performed Schubert's magnificant Piano Trio no. 2 in Eb major at the Central City Library as part of the Thursday Heritage Concerts programme. Featuring Harris Leung on violin, Hyen Kim on cello and Jonathon Dunlop on piano, the Trio gave their inaugural performance as an ensemble. This podcast features the first allegro movement followed by a brief interview with the musicians. Schubert's trio was completed in November 1827, and first performed on the 26th March 1828, in a private concert of works entirely by Schubert, including a string quartet (possibly The Death and the Maiden quartet, D. 810) and songs for choir and solo voices. It was a successful premiere, and resulted in the publication of the work later that year – shortly before Schubert’s untimely death at the age of 32 on the 19th November 1828. Unlike the B-flat major Piano Trio D. 898, this trio is much more expansive and is one of the longest trios of its time.

Together they looked at the history behind Ghibli's films (including Spirited Away, My Neighbour Totoro and Princess Mononoke), and got a critical perspective from Jake as a first-time viewer. They covered all of Studio Ghibli's films, visited Japan on the ultimate Ghibli pilgrimage, and have since interviewed artists, animators and filmmakers who have either worked on or have been deeply inspired by Ghibli's films. With their co-host Steph Watts, they have also branched out to cover filmographies of other studios and filmmakers whose work has revolutionised animation, from Satoshi Kon and Mamoru Hosoda to Cartoon Saloon and Henry Selick.Where will we go next?
