Dans les années 1970, le Baobab Club naît sous l'impulsion du gouvernement de Senghor, cherchant à dynamiser la scène culturelle de Dakar. Fondé par Adrien Senghor et ses collaborateurs, l'orchestre recrute des musiciens émérites pour devenir une véritable vitrine musicale du Sénégal. Le nom "Baobab" est imposé, symbolisant la République.Les premières années voient la production d'albums mémorables, mais sont aussi marqués par la tragédie en 1975 avec le décès de Laye Mboup dans un accident. En 1977, le Baobab Club se transforme en "Baobab", quittant son lieu d'origine. La popularité du Baobab connaît un déclin à partir des années 80 face à l'émergence de nouvelles figures musicales au Sénégal. Des dissensions internes se font sentir, et en 1999, on parle même de leur "explosion". Cependant, en 2002, le Baobab renaît sous l'impulsion de Nick Gold, manager du Buena Vista Social Club. Avec la participation d'artistes renommés, dont Ibrahim Ferrer et Youssou Ndour, le Baobab produit un album considéré comme un chef-d'œuvre.En novembre 2016, Ndiouga Dieng quitte ce monde, suivi en 2018 par Médoune Diallo et en 2019 par le très regretté Issa Sissokho.La sortie d'un nouvel album en 2017 sera également l'occasion de rendre hommage à Ndiouga. "Hommage à Ndiouga Dieng" voit la participation de Thione Seck, qui réinterprète "Sey".Au fil des décennies, l'orchestre Baobab continue de tisser sa propre légende, représentant un riche éventail musical influencé par les diverses régions du Sénégal.
