En Leones del Mar (Madrid, Edaf, 2022), el marino español Guillermo Nicieza desgrana la compleja historia de la Armada española en el siglo XVIII, la época clave en que se disputó el dominio de los océanos en una lucha a tres bandas entre España, el Reino Unido y Francia. La primera parte del libro presenta la organización de la Armada y los resultados de diversas reformas que se centraron en optimizar la construcción de barcos, la disponibilidad de materiales y tripulaciones y la localización de puertos, bajo persistente presión de continuas ofensivas británicas en especial centradas en los dominios españoles en América. En la segunda parte, el autor describe algunas de las más famosas campañas militares de la época, así como exploraciones llevadas a cabo por oficiales y barcos españoles por todo el hemisferio occidental, en la era dorada de la Ilustración hispana. The move towards more renewables in our energy systems complicates matters even further, requiring the development of an integrated power grid and continuous and steady transformation of the UK power system. Network flows must be managed reliably under uncertain demands, uncertain supply, emerging network technologies and possible failures and, further, prices in related markets can be highly volatile. Mathematicians working with engineers and economists, can make significant contributions to address such issues, by helping to develop fit-for-purpose models for next generation energy systems.
