Lesson of a Lifelong Sweathog
from Failing Up · host Timothy Mahar
Way back in my high school days I really did not want to be pegged or placed in a group with a title, or activity. I liked to hang out with a wide array of characters. I was not, nor wanted to be one of the cool kids, not a good student, I played sports but did not want to be a "jock". I liked to break the rules and challenge most of the teachers. Classes were structured and lessons cookie cutter. I was bored and a bit of a screwball. That changed in September of 1975 when ABC premiered a television program titled, "Welcome Back Kotter". It was about a teacher who returns to his roots and has a class of irreverent students called Sweathogs. A fun loving bunch who did not fit into a mold. That was me! I was a Sweathog! Sweathogs did have confidence, a mischievous nature, and aversion to the status quo. We also paid a price for our individuality, but it was worth it every time! Fast forward many years and this Sweathog is an Assistant Dean at Syracuse University and then Cornell University. This was my revenge towards all those chalk board, (Bored) jockeys of years gone by. I still tend to tweak authority and I am not impressed by standing and title alone. I am still a bit of a screwball. Most importantly though, I am a lifelong Sweathog!timothymahar.org
