Lessons from the Olive Tree

Replacement Theology, also called supersessionism, teaches that the church has permanently displaced Israel and inherited all her covenant promises. I believe Romans 11 answers that view with a resounding no. Paul asks two pivotal questions in this chapter. Has God rejected His people? Is Israel’s fall final? And to both he gives the strongest negation in the Greek language. May it never be. The thesis of Romans 9 through 11 is stated plainly in Romans 9:6: the Word of God has not failed. God chose Israel, God set them aside temporarily, and God will restore them. There is always a believing remnant in the present, and there will be a national recovery in the future. The olive tree illustration makes clear that Gentile believers are not superior to Israel. We have been grafted in, and God is fully able to graft natural branches back into their own tree.
