God desires His people to maintain tender, responsive hearts rather than allowing them to become hardened through spiritual negligence. Hearts can become hardened through repeated exposure to truth without response, being around spiritual things without true commitment, and consistently ignoring God's prompting. The danger lies in confusing religious activity with genuine relationship - attending church, being involved in ministry, and knowing biblical truth don't automatically indicate a right standing with God. The call is to examine our hearts honestly and respond promptly to God's voice.
