Reposons la question avec cette altération, comme on dit en musique: la musique seule peut-elle changer le monde ? Peut-elle au moins être le véhicule de la dénonciation de l’injustice ? On peut répondre oui, lorsque son interprète joue par exemple du saxophone, qu’il aime aussi chanter, incarner et transmettre une émotion authentique, vécue, libérée de tout vernis commercial, pas une émotion conçue pour le marketing. Lorsque ce musicien a su avancer sur les ponts lancés entre le combat pour les droits civiques des Afroaméricains, sa transcription dans ce qu’on a appelé le «free jazz» puis le hip-hop, le rap, sans condamner le passé pour lui-même mais plutôt les valeurs du passé, sans rien lâcher d’une certaine rage dans l’alchimie d’une poésie nourrie de spiritualité. Ce musicien s’appelle Archie Shepp et il évoque tout cela au micro de Serge Mariani pour une Jazz Interview sur Art District radio consacrée à la sortie de l’album que l’artiste, né en 1937 en Floride, a enregistré en compagnie du pianiste Jason Moran: Let My People Go (Label Archieball 2021).
