Even so, it does not appear that that the crowd had any particular ill will or ill intent here. They were just trying to see Jesus themselves. In the process they ended up blocking Zacchaeus. How many times do we would be followers of Jesus end up blocking the view? How many of us are like the Pharisee in Luke 18, smug in our self righteousness, bragging that we aren’t like those people who are over there? We make it impossible for folks to see Jesus through our condescension and arrogance. How many of us are like the Pharisee in Luke 18, smug in our self righteousness, bragging that we aren’t like those people who are over there? We make it impossible for folks to see Jesus through our condescension and arrogance. Many early Christians blocked Jesus with all their demands around circumcision, clean and unclean, sabbath observation, and abstaining from meat that any contact with idolatry. They meant well. But these were serious obstacles to folk seeing Jesus. I’m convinced more of us just need to get out the way and stop blocking the view. I’m Horace McMillon.
