Let's Talk: GMG History of Apollo Record Label

•Apollo Record Label was a New York City record label founded in the 1944 by Hy Siegel and Ted Gottlieb.  The following year in 1945 it was sold to Ike and Bess Berman. Apollo Records was named for the Apollo Theater which was nearby the record label’s offices and studio.  •Apollo was known for blues, doo-wop, gospel, jazz and rock & roll, however the genre which took off and main staged the others was gospel music during its highlighted years with the signing of Mahalia Jackson.  They also had other gospel groups such as the Roberta Martin Singers, Alex Bradford and the Alex Bradford singers to name a few.  The label also had Dinah Washington (who began her career singing gospel with Sallie Martin Singers). •Apollo also featured Doo-Wop and Jazz and for a brief time had Dean martin signed to the label. •Bess Berman who was one of the owners who eventually took the lead becoming a force in the music industry being the only woman in that position during the 1940”s. •Please send me an email sharing your thoughts about this show segment also if you have any suggestions of future guests you would like to hear on the show.
