Letting A Child Have Reasonable Autonomy

from The Autistic Mile Hosted by Jim Gaffney

Giving children a healthy sense of choice can be an important part of helping them build confidence, independence, and trust. It can be beneficial to let children—autistic or not—have an appropriate level of control over the decisions that affect them. Even small choices can help a child feel respected and involved rather than simply directed. Adults should be careful with rhetorical questions, sarcasm, and figurative language. Some autistic individuals interpret words very literally, so a question that was never intended as a genuine choice may be understood as exactly that. If the child gives an answer and is then told that option was never actually available, the experience can become confusing or upsetting. Without understanding the hidden social meaning behind the question, they may interpret the rejection as unfairness or even as a personal slight. Clear, direct communication can help prevent these misunderstandings and create a stronger sense of trust between children and the adults supporting them. #TheAutisticMile #Autism #ActuallyAutistic #Neurodiversity #AutisticChildren #Communication #LiteralThinking #Parenting #SpecialNeeds #AutismAcceptance #UnderstandingAutism #ChildDevelopment #SelfAdvocacy #Inclusion #YouTubeShorts
