Leviticus, Numbers, & Deuteronomy Explained

What are Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy about? In this Old Testament review, we look at the purpose, structure, and major content of these three books of the Bible and review what we have learned about them. As we move through the Old Testament, it is important not only to know the names of the books but to understand why each book was written and what its major themes and contents are. In this lesson, we review: Leviticus — the ceremonial law, sacrifices, priests, worship, cleanliness, holy living, vows, and the covenant blessings and curses. We also consider how the sacrificial system points forward to Jesus Christ and His once-for-all sacrifice. Numbers — the first and second generations of Israel, the censuses, Israel's organization and wilderness journey, the twelve spies, Balaam, the preservation of God's people, and preparation to enter the Promised Land. Deuteronomy — Moses' final words to Israel, the review and renewal of the covenant, the repetition of God's law, covenant blessings and curses, the transfer of leadership to Joshua, and the death of Moses. This lesson is especially useful for Christians who want to understand the Old Testament, Biblical interpretation, the structure of the Bible, and how its books fit together.
