Luego de una larga lucha por parte de grupos ambientalistas y defensores de la semilla nativa, la sexagésima cuarta Legislatura logró expedir la Ley Federal para el Fomento y Protección del Maíz Nativo. Esto ocurrió en septiembre de 2019 y para abril del siguiente año, dicha ley fue promulgada y con ello se logró el reconocimiento de esta semilla en todo lo relativo a la producción, comercio y consumo, como patrimonio alimentario nacional.
