Being LGBTQ in Jamaica
from The Unapologetically Black Podcast · host Dope Black Women
Throughout Jamaican culture, whether it’s music or language, Jamaica has historically been a homophobic space to be in. Members of the LGBTQ+ community are 5 times more likely to be victim of violent crimes and 20 times more likely to be victims of sexual assault than the rest of the population. This week, Leanne sits down with the Glenroy Murray and Renae Green, Executive Directors of two leading LGBTQ organisations, Equality for All and TransWave JA. They discuss their advocacy efforts, the progressive steps being made to make Jamaica a more tolerant and inclusive space and the nuances of discrimination faced, particularly for trans women.
