LGR Halted: A Win for Persistence and Truth

As David highlights in his update, forcing the government to halt the Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) rollout is a massive milestone. It is a direct result of the fantastic, relentless work you have all done,submitting notices, challenging local officials, and refusing to back down. Thank you for standing firm. But our work is far from over. This pause is a crucial pushback, but it also strips away the “government mandate” excuse that councils have been hiding behind. Now, we must capitalise on this momentum and bring the other elements of this administrative machine into the daylight. With the LGR structure frozen on legal advice, we must immediately direct our attention to: * Regulation 19 Consultations & Local Plans: Councils are still trying to rush through unevidenced housing targets and speculative greenfield developments before the public catches on. We now have formal, documented admissions that neither the Ministry nor local councils hold the 5-year local residency and employment baseline data required to justify these targets. We must force them to produce the empirical evidence or reject the plans entirely. * Local Asset Disposal : Any statutory officers or councillors still pushing ahead with public asset disposals and transition spending for a structural framework that is now officially suspended are doing so without government cover and entirely on their own personal liability. * And of course all other issues we are struggling with which are directly connected to the same agenda Let’s use this crack in their foundation to keep dismantling the rest of the system.
